Estimates From Contractors

Check to see if there is a charge for getting an estimate.  Next, get several estimates so that you may compare prices and terms.  (also: see Quotes section)

You get what you pay for.  A low estimate should be a signal to check your contractor's experience a little closer. Sometimes a contractor offering to do an expensive job for an unusually low price will often make up that difference in large cost over runs. There is also the possibility that the contractor might not be familiar with the work in question.
